Australia sends 4,500 troops to fight in Vietnam on this day in 1966. Australian Vietnam veteran Allan Wood brought a wreath of poppies to our Veterans Day ceremony at The Wall this November. The wreath reflected the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, pictured above.

"So where else in today’s world, does a veteran, including an Australian one, receive a constant barrage from strangers, of thank-you for your service,' & from fellow vets, of 'welcome home brother??' I’m just not used to it, but it’s nice all the same," Wood said of The Wall in Washington, D.C.

In all, 521 Australian service members died as a result of the Vietnam War, and more than 3,000 were wounded.
